Pew Ring 2025
The close grain of this 150-year-old pitch pine signifies it grew in a very cold northern climate. It was later fashioned into church pews that resided for 60 odd years in Mangersta’s Free Presbyterian Mission Hall in Uig on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. This modest building was the mid-week place of worship for local residents until it ceased being used in the 1990’s.
Now this wood will encircle a finger in a different type of veneration, one that honours the precious biodiversity of our home planet. The ring comprises a lock of Eriskay horse hair, a breed of horse native to the Hebrides that has evolved to its harsh climate and known for its calm sure footedness through challenging terrain.
